Carey is the bass player in multi-platinum selling indie band Athlete. Along with his fellow band members he wrote numerous hits including Half Light, Superhuman Touch, El Salvador, You Got The Style, Chances, and Wires which won an Ivor Novello award for 'Best Contemporary Single'.

Carey has worked extensively with Dermot Kennedy both as co-writer and producer on several tracks including A Closeness, Moments Passed, Boston and Lost. Other credits include Tom Speight, Amber Run, Dahlia Sleeps and Leo Stannard.  He has recently been producing tracks for Freya Ridings' debut album.
